Is the 'apocalypse' a metaphor for what happens to your world view when you gain enlightenment?

i am interested in this idea that the apocalypse does happen at any time for individuals who gain enlightenment or gnosis. sort of like puberty. this means that the apocalypse is always now, and explains why people have always felt it's close at hand.
